LRC Currently Reading (and Watching!) – 20/03/2015

March 20, 2015 by LRC Leave a Comment

What the LRC Staff at SGS College are reading and watching this month!

Mel (Stroud): Reading – We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, by Karen Joy Fowler.
Watching – Fortitude, on Sky Atlantic.

Ryan (Filton): I’m reading The Yiddish Policeman’s Union, by Michael Chabon – It’s an alternate history, hard-boiled detective novel set in a world where Alaska was offered as a temporary settlement for Jewish refugees during World War II and has since developed into a large Yiddish-speaking metropolis. The main character is investigating the murder of a junkie chess-genius who may have been the messiah in the months before Alaska reverts back to the US and the Jews are, once again, displaced. Which now that I write that down seems ridiculous. But it’s really really good.

Dani (Filton and WISE): I’ve just finished Lords and Ladies, by the eternally phenomenal Sir Terry Pratchett (*GNUTerryPratchett*), and next up I will be starting the next book in that collection (the Witches discworld books), which is Maskerade. I am also still working my way through all those Current Archaeology back copies. And still slowly working through Notre Dame de Paris and Alain Decaux’s L’histoire de France aux Enfants, as part of my “I will learn French well enough to read and fully understand and enjoy French Archaeological Journals” thing! Haha!
The TV Series’ I am watching at the moment are Better Call Saul, Once Upon A Time, and That 70s Show. And SpongeBob Squarepants. Always SpongeBob <3 .

Mel (Filton):  I am watching Better Call Saul, Fresh Off The Boat, Cougar Town… too many things to list. We watch a lot of stuff!

Lyn (Filton):  Well, I’m not currently reading anything but I’ve not long ago finished ‘Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell’.  Very unusual fantasy book about two magicians in 19th century England.   It’s going to be on the BBC soon….hope they don’t muck it up!  Also, I read ‘The Minituarist’ which was quite good but not as fab as it was made out to be.  Another unusual book though.
So…what am I watching at the moment?!  Ummm, according to my TV planner it’s  ‘Elementary’, ‘Bones’, ’12 Monkeys’, ‘Poldark’, ‘Big Bang Theory’, ‘Grimm’ and ‘Extant’.  Also ‘Helix’ season 2.  Ha!  Nice odd mix there!

Linzi (WISE): Reading Clan of the Cave Bears, by Jean Auel. I’ve just completed series 7 of The West Wing.

Beth (Filton and WISE): Reading: The Long Earth, by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter.
