New Academic Year, New Us!

September 7, 2021 by Dani Wolfegang-James Leave a Comment

A new academic year has begun. Hooray!

Everyone on the SGS College LibraryPlus+ team is super excited to welcome back continuing learners and say hello to new ones for the 2021/2022 Academic Year!

So, without further ado…

A rectangular image in landscape format. Text reads "Hello and Welcome Back" in slightly cartoonish font. The word "Hello" is blue with an off-set green outline; the words "Welcome Back" are green with an off-set blue outline. Alone the bottom of the image are three cute cartoon animals waving toward the reader: a yellow chick with a blue speech bubble saying "Hi!"; a green from with pink blushing cheeks; and a white cat with orange spots. Peeking out from behind the letter "L" in "Hello" is a little grey and white hamster, with small black font over their head which reads "Hello!". The background colour is a light pastel blue-based green. End image description.

Did you all have an enjoyable summer? We hope so!

And are you totally psyched to be back in college?! We know the answer to that is definitely YES!

We’ve Got News!

Rebrand!

Whilst learners and term-time staff have been away for Summer Vacation, the library staff have been working on some pretty cool projects that we think you folks will be interested in!

First off, some of you may have noticed that we have rebranded!

Instead of being the “Learning Resource Centre” (or “LRC” for short), we are now called “LibraryPlus+“!

We even have a fancy new logo, courtesy of the SGS Marketing team…

The new LibraryPlus+ logo. Text reads "LibraryPlus+". The word "Library" and the "+" sign are dark grey, and the word "Plus" is bright blue. To the left of the text is a stylised image of an open book. Most of this book image is grey, but with two curved bars, to resemble pages, in bright green and bright blue. End of description.

Much snazzier, right? We certainly think so!

And, even more excitingly, our rebranding isn’t the only thing that’s changed in the libraries over the summer; in fact, a whole lot has been going on, across a few of our sites!

Filton

LibraryPlus+ Filton has been redesigned!

Our big room is now the Group Study Area. It is set up for groups of students to work together more easily.

Our smaller room is now the quiet study area, for students who want to work quietly by themselves.

We also have lots of comfy chairs and single-occupancy desks scattered between the bookshelves and in our fiction area, for comfortable quiet reading and study when you have time between classes!

Photograph of the Quiet Study Area at LibraryPlus+ Filton. The photograph shows a room with grey carpet and three windows along the right wall. The walls are sky-blue on the right, and pastel yellow on the left. Around the walls are desks with computers. At jaunty angles in the middle of the room are three single-occupancy desks. On the far back wall, to the right, are black and white vinyl stickers which read "Study Area". To the front right on the wall are more vinyl stickers with white text, but these are unreadable in this image other than the large word "BOOKS!"

A photograph of one corner of the Group Study Area room at LibraryPlus+ Filton. Grey carpet and four windows along the left wall. The walls are mostly blue, but a portion of wall on the right side is mint green, and a small part of a mural is visible, cut off by the edge of the phot. Along the far walls are three desks with six computers, and a low soft bench. In the middle of the photo is a large group desk with two computers, one on each side of the large desk, and four chairs. There is also a large round table with a a chair. To the far left, cut off by the edge of the photograph, there is another round table with a chair. To the left of the back wall, before the mural, are two bays of bookshelves filled with books. On the wall, near the corner, are black and white vinyl stickers which read "Study Area". Next to this on the other side of the corner is some more text in vinyl stickers, but this is too small to read on this photograph. End of Image description.

We’ll be doing a separate post, soon, with some “in progress” photos of our work over the summer, so you can take a look at the chaos involved in pulling a library apart and putting it back together again. That post will also have a lot more photos of your beautiful, shiny, lovely, finished library, as well, so keep an eye on the LibraryPlus+ blog posts and have a look at what we’ve been up to!

WISE

At the WISE campus, we have TWO new libraries+! In the Brunel building, we have LibraryPlus+ Brunel, which is our FE library. LibraryPlus+ Brunel can be found in B209. And in the UC building, we have a new HE library: LibraryPlus+ UC WISE, which can be found in F60!

A-Block

And finally, we have a new Sixth Form library over in the Filton A-Block centre: LibraryPlus+ Sixth Form! You can find this smaller satellite library and study centre at the top of A-Block in C2112!

That’s All, Folks!

There you have it! That’s all of our big news from over the summer.

But we’ll have much more to tell you over the coming weeks and months, so make sure to check our LibraryPlus+ blog posts frequently. For current SGS students, we are also on Teams, so head on over to our channel to keep on top of the latest LibraryPlus+ news, events, conversations, and recommendations – and to get in touch with us, too!

The teams across SGS LibraryPlus+ are always eager to hear from SGS students and staff. So don’t be shy, come say hi!

You can message us on our Teams channel, via email at libraryplus@sgscol.ac.uk, on Twitter @SGSLibraryPlus, or, of course, you can come up and talk to us in person at your nearest LibraryPlus+ campus! We’re always happy to help 🙂
