Reading Ahead 2021/22

November 25, 2021 by Erin Peacock Leave a Comment

Challenge yourself to get Reading Ahead!

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.” – Stephen King.

The Reading Agency aims to bring this magic to readers all over the country. It has been proven that reading opens up opportunities in both education and the workplace, improving not just literacy skills, but writing skills too. One in six adults in the UK struggle with reading, but this challenge can open up gateways by building confidence and changing perspectives.

Reading Ahead challenges you to read six resources by the end of the academic year. This can be anything from books to poems, magazine articles to website pages. You’ll receive a diary to record what you read and write a short review about the content. It’s a great way to open yourself up to reading for pleasure and discover the delights that this can offer!

How do I take part?

This is a challenge for staff and students! You can collect your individual reading diary from LibraryPlus+ Filton or Stroud, as well as bookmarks and flyers with all the details you’ll need. You have until the end of the academic year to complete your six reads, at which point you’ll receive a certificate signed by the six awesome Reading Ambassadors. If you need help deciding what to read, feel free to pick your LibraryPlus+ staff’s brains for ideas – we have plenty of suggestions for all tastes and can point you in the right direction!

At Filton, the English and Maths Skills Department and Preparation for Work and Life are also both involved in the Reading Ahead challenge! You can talk to them about the process and ask any questions you might have.

You can also use The Reading Agency’s ‘Find a Read’ tool to narrow down the options based on your current reading ability. You can find this here.
