Transgender Awareness Week

November 13, 2021 by Erin Peacock Leave a Comment

Transgender Awareness Week happens every November, aiming to raise trans visibility and address issues faced by the community in everyday life. It’s a time to learn, reflect and honour transgender lives lost to violence. SGS Library+ are proud to support this awareness week and have highlighted some resources below from our catalogues that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community!

What is Transgender Awareness Week?

During this week, transgender people and their allies internationally join to generate attention to the community. This includes educating people, talking about experiences and gaining traction in making governmental change to end violence and discrimination.

This particular awareness day follows the week, taking place on November 20th. Transgender Day of Remembrance was initiated by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in memory of Rita Hester, a trans woman, who was murdered in 1998. We come together to remember and honour all trans lives lost to violence and you can find vigils happening across the country to attend.

What can you do?

For this year’s Transgender Awareness Week, people are encouraged to watch Disclosure on Netflix. This is a feature made by Laverne Cox and Sam Feder that tackles media representation of transgender lives. It aims to expose how Hollywood reinforces stereotypes, increasing anxieties over gender. It’s an insightful, evocative documentary and a must-watch for all LGBTQ+ allies if you can get access!

What resources can you find at LibraryPlus+?

We aim to have a truly inclusive selection of books, DVDs and journals across all SGS sites so everyone is welcome and can find stories that reflect their own experiences. We’ve put together a graphic that has some top staff suggestions for books related to transgender awareness.

There’s some new books on the way, too!
