SGS College LibraryPlus currently has a collection of around 530 eBooks that can all be accessed from this website.
You can search for eBooks by using the black search box on the right hand side of this page. This is what the box looks like (you can search here too)…
Our searchbox is set to search for eBooks by default, but by using the dropdown menu you can also set it to search for anything else in our library catalogue.
As an example, search for the term “networking”. You should get the following result:
Please click the first listing: “Microsoft Windows networking essentials”. You should see the following screen:
Click the “Read me…” button to view the eBook.
Logging in
Once you have found the book that you would like to read and clicked on it, you may be required to log in before gettting access. You will see this screen:
For staff the username will be firstname.lastname with the same password you use to access the college PCs. For students the username will be their student number (e.g. fcs333333) and their password will be the same one they use to access the college computers. Do not include the @sgscol.ac.uk part of your ID when inputting your username.
Reading the books
We have two eBook suppliers and they present their books in different ways.
This first example is provided by Dawson. Their books are presented in the following way:
Click the icon marked with the red circles to read the book online.
You will be taken to the following page:
The pages of the book are displayed in the viewer on the left-hand side of the screen. You can cycle through the pages using the arrows on either side of the viewer or use the navigation options in the column on the left of the screen.
If the book you have chosen is provided by eBrary, the viewer will be slightly different. To test this out, go back to the LibraryPlus website and search for the term “horse biology” – there should only be one result. Open the result and click “Read me…” again, you will be taken to the following screen:
Click the button marked “Read Online” and highlighted in the screenshot with red concentric circles.
You will then be taken to the following viewing platform:
Like the Dawson viewer you can move through the pages using arrows that are now located in the top right of the screen, or you can use the navigation pane on the left.
Both Dawson and eBrary allow limited downloads and printing of the texts according to set restrictions, but the viewers shown above offer complete access to the full texts 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
If you have any questions regarding the use of eBooks, have difficulties accessing the resources or would like to book a session for your students explaining how to use them (as well as the other eResources provided by LibraryPlus) then please call extension 228 (or 01179 092 228 if dialling externally) or email LibraryPlus@sgscol.ac.uk.
